BIO of Sandra Leng Kashyap

Grand Marais, Minnesota

I grew up in the village of Grand Marais on the northern coast of Lake Superior. If you've ever seen or experienced Lake Superior, it is truly magnificent. Like any great body of water, it has its moods -- moods which have inspired many artists over countless years.

As a child, I attended summer art classes at a local Art Colony.
Often, we sat painting watercolors on the rocky shores of Lake Superior or on pebble beaches near quaint little fish houses nestled in the harbor.
It was in that setting that I learned the fundamentals of painting. Those teachings were enhanced by art classes taken during my years at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota.

At Carleton I majored in philosophy and became interested in the religions and philosophies of the East. After graduating from Carleton, I had the opportunity to spend nearly seven years living in India and Nepal, studying first-hand the richness, complexity, and depth of those ancient cultures.

It was an experience I shall never forget.

For many years I was married to an Indian mystic and yogi I met while
studying Vedanta in the foothills of the Himalayas. We moved to the States in 1980 and settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico. When the time came for me to separate and pursue my own career, the words of the renowned teacher, Joseph Campbell, rang in my mind, "Follow your bliss."

Therefore, I chose to develop my art. And here I am.

That's my life in a nutshell. Some might say that life truly begins when the nutshell is cracked, the conditionings and identifications of the ego are dropped, and the spirit is released -- free to experience the immeasurable energy in the moment "now." But that's another story without a storyline. It simply "is." So I'll leave it at "that."
