ARTIST'S STATEMENT

"My philosophy of the artistic process begins with the idea that we are each absolutely unique expressions of one creative energy. As we allow that energy to flow through us and as we observe the process, the process will teach, guide, and refine us. The result is the unfolding of our own unique expression of creativity, our own artistic style, and our own individuality. In that, there is no competition, isolation, or exclusion, but complementary interdependence.

In that, we are ceaselessly taught by the evolution of our own art. Our foundation arising from concentration, study, and discipline develops into a seemingly effortless movement in spontaneous creativity and meditation.

In my view of the process of painting, I am first drawn to an image by a heart-felt vision and inspiration. Then, I employ the left brain to analyze the component parts and steps in the execution of the image. Choice in the application of colors is felt by the right brain. If a color "feels" right, each consecutive color is determined through its relation to the previous color. Stepping back to view the painting when it is complete, I feel a fusion or union of the original, vague, heartfelt inspiration and the vision of the image with the final painting. A great sense of awe and elation arises, as though the painting were given birth. That feeling of exuberance then subsides and withdraws into space. A feeling of emptiness, hope, and gentle expectation arises for the promise of a new painting."
